Mads Lange's Forgotten Treasures
All around the world, remarkable events have hap- pened and in turn have changed the course of events since ancient times to the present. On 15 June 1219, a red flag with a white cross miraculously descend- ed from heaven during the Battle of Lyndanisse (now Tallinn, Estonia). Catholic King Valdemar II of Den- mark displayed it to his troops who became filled with courage and won the fight against the pagans during the Northern Crusades. This is the divine origin of Dannebrog, the flag of Denmark. Then 800 years lat- er, a fantastic incident happened on the other side of the world in Bali that would connect a wide range of people and places. The next more personal link in this story, however, took place 725 years after the descent of the miraculous flag.
Peter Bloch was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 1 June 1944 during World War II. He is descended from the oldest dental family in that Scandinavian coun- try. His great grandfather Victor Bloch was professor in the dental school in Copenhagen. His father Palle Bloch established the first periodontics department, before and during the war, at Denmark’s dental high school in Copenhagen. After the war ended in Europe in May 1945 and then in Asia in August 1945, it took several years for things to settle down.
